Rudy's Corner Understanding Plants & Soils Anyone who has used BLEND™ is aware of how it helps plants grow but did you ever look at the soil during or after the growing season? A number of years ago, I had a side by side comparison between BHN products compared to a competitor's product line. This was a foliar treatment on potatoes and the BHN combination had a high BLEND™ percentage. The yield increase did surprise me but not as much as the soil structure change. This field was in a very heavy, high CEC soil but when I went to dig my yield plot it was extremely mellow. The change in the soil structure compared to the untreated area was very dramatic. This is when I learned about the many properties of BLEND™. Consider the way our heavy soils tend to set up like a brick over the course of a growing season. I have seen many truck loads of potatoes or bulbs that seem to have as many dirt clods as they do crop. I think it would be better if the soil stayed in the field which the BLEND™ would help to achieve. Now consider how hard it is for plant roots to develop and grow in a soil that is too tight. When the soil is not friable enough to allow oxygen to the roots, the roots will die and the plant will suffer. 2 We see this every growing season and yet we can do little to prevent it. Now you can: apply one quart of BLEND™ per acre early in the growing season and follow up two one-pint applications a month apart. This two quart per acre in season treatment will cost about $23 per acre. Compared to what we are doing now, and the problems we have now, this could be the best $23 you have spent on your crop. Another component that separates BLEND™ from soil surfactants is what it does to the soil biological system. You have heard the people at BHN speak of their Micro Carbon Technology™ (MCT) and now we are seeing an example of it in a physical setting. Some of BHN's competitors speak of their high organic acid content products but they do not hold a candle to the amount in BLEND™. This is the "Micro Carbon" in the MCT. The organic acids in BLEND™ not only support plant health but also support the soil biological system. This in turn aids in developing an aggressive root system that will naturally open up more air spaces in the soil structure. When this happens you have more root growth, more lateral development, and more plant vigor.
